This is the actual story of how I discovered
the almost magical draw the first item has on folks. The first time I made
item number one was at that trade show in Atlanta Georgia in August of 2000.
DeWalt was paying me as a professional demonstrator and supplying the wood so
I gave them away for free. At 9 am as the show first opened, I started cutting
them out and gave them to the DeWalt employees working the booth with me
(Including the three young ladies pictured below).
The noise drew a crowd to see what I was doing on the scroll saw (which was
the whole idea) and everyone else wanted to get these great items for
themselves. Actually, most men wanted to get one for their wives or for their
kids or grandkids; Same thing with the older women. The younger girls wanted
one for their boyfriends and visa versa.
The crowds were relentless. They wouldn't even
let me go to the bathroom! I finally had to beg for their patience to get a
10-minute break. When I got back, they were still waiting. The same thing
happened at lunch and the afternoon break. I cut between 130 and 150 - I lost
count after about 80 - that very first day when I was just learning all of the
intricacies of making the first item. The fun was just beginning because this
was a 4-day show! Thank God I was only scheduled to work for 3 days. The next
two days were exactly the same. At times, I had 25-30 people gathered around
just to see what was going on. In the first three days I made between 400 and
500 of the first item. And that's how it all started.
I Discovered
Another Hot Seller in 2003
I learned about this item in the spring of
2003. I received a call from a fellow living in the North Georgia Mountains,
the resort town of Helen, Georgia. This quaint north Georgia town is a tourist
trap patterned after an Alpine village where they sell $4 hot dogs, funnel
cake and trinkets imported from China. Several years ago he had been working a
booth at a trade show and the fellow in the booth next to him made these
little things I'm calling #2. This other fellow was drawing huge crowds around
his scroll saw. My new friend paid $10 that day for his #2. I don't think I
can get that much on a regular basis so I have priced my #2 at $4 each or two
for $6, although you might want to try a higher price depending on your venue.

Because of my local reputation, having worked with DeWalt so often, I was
recommended to him as someone who could teach him just exactly how to make
item #2. He has a small sidewalk space in Helen, Ga. and will be selling them
to the tourists this summer. My new friend came down for a day of instruction
and exploration. I figured out how to make the item and we made several. Since
then I have made a bucket full and have had the same warm response as item #1.
He says he is having pretty good results so far and is excited about the rest
of the summer.
Do the
Math
Item #1 -- 20 items per hour X $2 ea = $40 per
hour.
If the first item takes 3 minutes to make, you can make up to 20 of them per
working hour (you have to take out for bathroom breaks, food, etc.) So, 20
items at an average of $2 each equals $40 per hour (Assume everyone buys 2 to
get lower price each so average is lower - just to be conservative)
Item #2 -- 12 items per hour X $3 ea = $36 per hour.
If the second item takes 5 minutes to make, you can make up to 12 of them per
working hour (you have to take out for bathroom breaks, food, etc.) So, 12
items at an average of $3 each equals $36 per hour.
Notes: Not everyone will buy two at a time so your average selling price will
probably be higher than the conservative examples given above. You can make up
many, but not all, of these items ahead of time at home which increases your
profits that much more. You will still make lots of these items at the
particular venue. This is a great way to make extra money using spare time on
weekends or in the evening. If you are retired, work part time or go to
school, so much the better.
Tools You Need
Tools You Need You need a scroll saw, some
blades, some wood and a drill with one bit. Any scroll saw will work. You also
need the How-To CD and the two sample items I talked about above. The CD gives
detailed step-by-step instructions, along with pictures and illustrations, on
how to make each item. It has tips and hints to save time and material. There
are several variations for you to use. Even if you don't want to work flea
markets and trade shows, these items sell very well by word of mouth. Folks
see them at work at church or at your house and they want to know how they can
get some for themselves.
Type of Scroll Saw Needed: Any scroll saw will work. However, the better the
saw the better the work and the least effort on your part. I prefer the DeWalt
788 personally. If you don't yet have a scroll saw, but still don't want to
spend the $450 for the DeWalt, or $1,000 for a Hegner or RBI Hawk, I recommend
a saw that at least has variable speed and uses plain end blades. A Dremel,
Rigid, Delta, Grizzly, etc. will do to get started and generally cost around
$150.
Skill Level
Required
I am quite skilled as a scroll sawyer and very
experienced, so I can do a very good job and do it quite fast. I also have a
DeWalt 788 saw which is a very good machine. However, I have had lots of
students from beginners to experienced scrollers who do a fine job after some
practice. Nothing is difficult to learn, but you do need to be able to follow
a pattern line somewhat. Item #1 is very forgiving. Item #2 requires a little
more skill, but is easily mastered with 2 to 4 hours practice in your shop at
home. Most folks produce sellable items after their first couple of
tries.
Where to Sell
Items . . . The Easy Way!
Although they sell very well by word of mouth
(if they see it, they want it), here is the rest of the story. Since that
first show in 2000, I have made several thousand of these. At first I mostly
gave them away at trade shows for DeWalt or for other promotions. Then I had
the opportunity to begin to sell them. At first I charged only $0.50 each and
it was the same as if they were free. Then I went to $1, Then $2. I finally
set the price at $3 for one or $4 for two and the vast majority of the folks
get two or more. Another variation of Item #1 sells for $5 each and is great
for boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife and is a great seller. I have made
these at church events, trade shows, in parking lots of local businesses. I
teach woodworking and founded a scroll saw club so have taught many students
how to make these items. They have sold them at flea markets, swap meets and
church rummage sales. Folks buy 'em as fast as you can make 'em. The first
item is especially popular with kids or with parents who have kids. But
everybody loves 'em regardless of age. I have made them so long now that folks
come to these shows looking for me! They sell anywhere folks are gathered:
flea markets, church bazaars, swap meets, rummage sales, trade shows, tent
sales, sidewalk sales, county fairs, carnivals, school fund raisers, high
school and college football\baseball\soccer games, home and garden shows,
craft fairs, on the sidewalk in front of your local grocery store on the week
